Personal protective equipment
- Nitrile gloves, changed between compounds.
- Eye protection whenever a vial is opened or a needle is used.
- A laboratory coat, kept in the laboratory.
- Closed footwear and tied-back hair, as for any bench work.
Preparing the workspace
Clear and disinfect a dedicated area before starting. Handle one compound at a time so vials cannot be confused, and keep the certificate of analysis for the batch in view during preparation. Lyophilised peptides are static-prone and light powders can disperse — avoid draughts, open windows and nearby fans.
Aseptic technique
- Swab every stopper with alcohol and allow it to dry before piercing.
- Use a new sterile needle and syringe for each entry.
- Minimise the number of times a septum is pierced across the life of a vial.
- Never touch the needle shaft or the inside of a cap.
Waste and spills
- Dispose of needles and syringes into a compliant sharps container immediately after use.
- Route glass vials and residual material through the facility’s chemical waste stream, not general waste.
- Contain powder spills with damp wipes rather than sweeping, then disinfect the surface.
- Record any spill or breakage against the batch so material accounting stays accurate.
