What Are Research Peptides?

Peptides in one paragraph

A peptide is a short chain of amino acids joined by peptide bonds — the same chemistry that builds proteins, simply on a smaller scale. The convention in most laboratories is that anything up to roughly fifty residues is called a peptide, and anything longer is treated as a protein. Because they are short, peptides can be produced synthetically with a defined, reproducible sequence rather than expressed in a biological system.

In the body, peptides act as signalling molecules: they bind receptors, trigger cascades and regulate processes from tissue repair to metabolic control. That signalling role is precisely why they are useful in research. A synthetic peptide lets an investigator introduce one defined signal into a model system and observe what changes.

How research peptides are produced

Almost all research peptides supplied today are made by solid-phase peptide synthesis (SPPS), in which the chain is assembled one amino acid at a time on an insoluble resin support. Each cycle deprotects the growing chain, couples the next protected amino acid, then washes away the excess. When the sequence is complete the peptide is cleaved from the resin, purified — usually by preparative reverse-phase HPLC — and freeze-dried into the white powder that arrives in the vial.

Nothing about this process is biological, which is an advantage for reproducibility: the same sequence made twice under the same conditions gives materially the same product, and the analytical certificate proves it.

What arrives, and why it looks like that

  • A sealed glass vial containing a lyophilised (freeze-dried) powder or thin white cake — no liquid, no diluent.
  • A stated nominal quantity, for example 5 mg or 10 mg, referring to peptide content rather than total vial weight.
  • A batch code printed on the label that must match the certificate of analysis published on this website.
  • A purity figure of ≥99% by HPLC, with identity confirmed by mass spectrometry.

The legal position in Ireland

Research peptides are supplied in Ireland as laboratory chemicals for in-vitro and preclinical work. They are not authorised medicines, they carry no marketing authorisation from the HPRA, and they must not be administered to humans or animals. Purchasing implies that the buyer is a qualified research professional or acting on behalf of a research facility, and that the material stays inside that setting.

That distinction is not a formality. It determines what a supplier is permitted to tell you: we can describe purity, identity, stability, solubility and storage, and we cannot describe dosing, administration or protocols of use, because those belong to a medicinal context we do not operate in.
